Running a Business in Fashion : Day to Day Life

I have been long gone from this space and the title of this post says why. Running Sachini, the luxury clothing line based in London has taken a lot of my time and energy, in fact, all if not most of my waking minutes spent strategizing the brand and heading for a task after task from my to-do list. Yet, it has been the best career experience I have experienced so far. So in this series of Running a Business in Fashion, I am going to tell you all about it, the good, the bad, the challenges, the lessons, the celebrations and the nights spent awake.

Day to Day

It sounds more glamorous than it is. You picture someone dressed head to toe designer, wearing high heels, pacing calmly in a fashionable area in London. Well, though there are times that is true, the real picture is somewhat different. Dressed in an old pair of jeans and a jumper that is more cosy than trendy with a pair of trainers, carrying a large suitcase of pieces for the next collection, one hand holding a coffee, the other holding a breakfast croissant that will only get eaten by lunchtime, and waiting impatiently for the uber to arrive!

The main difference I noticed from my previous job before I started Sachini (Project manager in Finance) is that no two days are ever the same. Every day, you are met with a different set of challenges, there by implementing different strategies and solutions, meeting different people and traveling around. I personally love this. Though it can be exhausting and be demanding at times, it is never boring. It keeps you on your toes and pushes you to look and think outside the box. You learn from people and situations as you move along and it is fun seeing the brand progress as time passes on.

In my case, being a Project manager and working in Finance has been very helpful. If anything as skills and practices that make a difference in the actual running of the business is that being organized is the key. Knowing how to prioritise, knowing what tasks to be done and what to let go (yes, sometimes you have to let go some tasks) and plan the business as a business and being on top of the numbers can make a wold of a difference.
